Calpine
Project: Calpine Corporation proposed two new power plants at their Geysers facility in Northern California. The two plants would add nearly 100 megawatts to Calpine’s capacity. The new projects were proposed northwest of its existing complex, on 6,200 acres of leased private and state lands.
Challenge: Despite the applicant’s efforts to work with County Supervisors and staff, there were many political obstacles and delays standing in the way of the approval of the project. One such hurdle was a county report indicating the project would affect air quality, wildlife habitat, earthquake activity and noise.
Strategy & Execution: MPA worked with Calpine representatives to build a broad base of support for the project and build consensus with a number of the elected officials and staff.
Outcome: Approved 5-0 by the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors.
